Today is free food day. Ian, our Singaporean friend, who lives down the street from us invited us to his house int he afternoon for roti prata and curry because his landlord was away on holiday and he was housesitting. We all walked to the supermarket after that, three oily lumps.
Then my landlady, in a very sweet gesture, invited us for dinner today. And she's a super cook! Her daughter is staying over tonight, so she decided it would be a good idea to have us over to sit by the fire a bit and then for a home-cooked meal. They have a
real fireplace that uses real wood, actual chopped up logs that crackle and pop with the dancing flames! Like the fireplaces on Christmas in all the books we've read describing Christmases that Singaporeans have always wanted - with weather cold enough for a fire to be a pleasure. It helps that her home looks like something out of a catalogue. She has a very
precise sense of aesthetic, and everything is exactly where it should be, and looks beautiful for it!
Dinner was a roast beef and potatoes and potatoes and gravy, very English. My goodness... Best roast beef ever. Brynn doesn't even eat beef and she ate until she was damn happy. I had two helpings of everything. Couldn't help it, they were too good.
She and her daughter have such a good relationship, always laughing and warm. It made me think of Daddo and Mums and Meizee (and Jude and Alexander, wink wink.)and and how much I miss them and wish i was with them now. They are the most important people in my life and I love them more than anything in the whole world. My parents are the best people I know in every possible way, and Meizee is the most wonderful sister I could have. There is absolutely nothing more I could ask for.
Woah I think period is coming. I'm so emo. But! that doesn't make any of this less true!
I'm going to pick all the cranberries and walnuts out of my cranberry and walnut scone and eat them as i do my assignment.
